A new border haat will be set up at the No Man’s Land of Bholagonj area of Companiganj upazila in Sylhet bordering east Khashi hill of Meghalaya in India.
It has been informed that a group led by an additional secretary at the Ministry of Commerce from both countries will visit the haat on April 22.
Currently, four border haats exist on the Bangladesh-India borders, including one in Sunamgaj, Sylhet. Moreover, a memorandum was signed in 2018 between Finance Ministry secretaries of both countries on the opening of six more of this haats – to a total number of ten.
To maintain the trade and friendship of both countries, the new haat is being built at Companiganj. The haat is being constructed now and will meet completion by this June.
The haat will consist of 50 shops, 25 belonging from each country and openings from both sides of the border. Shops will be open from 11 am to 4 pm on Mondays and Thursdays.
Mohammad Nasir Ullah Khan, additional district magistrate of Sylhet, said: “Border haat management committee along with the additional secretaries will sit for meeting on April 22.
“The construction is being financed by India,” he added.
Bijen Banarjee, executive officer of Companiganj upazila, said: “70% construction of the haat is completed and hopefully it will be inaugurated by this December. The haat will act as a bridge between people from both sides and promote friendly relationship.”
Local leader Enayetullah Islam said:” The haat will not only promote bilateral trade, but also tourism by creating new communication ways for both countries.”
The decision of building border haat was taken by Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on October 23, 2010 during a visit to India to sign an agreement on border peace. The agreement initially mentioned two haats, but both countries later decided to build two more.
