Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Syed Muazzem Ali said on Thursday that fast-growing Bangladesh and India should combine their synergies in the areas of connectivity, trade, commerce and energy for the mutual benefit for the two neighbours as well as for the region.
“Connectivity offers a game-changing opportunity for India and Bangladesh,” the High Commissioner said, while speaking as a guest of honour at a seminar on “Political Economy of Bangladesh” at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
The seminar was organised by the Centre for South Asian Studies (CSSA) at JNU, said the High Commission.
JNU Vice Chancellor Prof Jagadesh Kumar presided over the seminar while CSAS Chairman Prof Sanjay Bhardwaj conducted it.
Md Abul Kalam Azad, Principal Coordinator (SDG Affairs) at Prime Minister’s Office, Bangladesh, Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman, Chairman of Palli Karma Sahayak Foundation (PKSF), Prof Chintamoni Mahapatra, JNU Rector and Sheikh Fazle Fahim, Senior Vice President of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) attended it.
Syed Muazzem Ali said Bangladesh’s jump to the status of a developing nation from the LDC category will create new opportunities in Indo-Bangla economic cooperation.
“Cooperation in the energy sector is the hallmark of our renewed engagements,” he said.
Explaining the UN-selected Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Abul Kalam Azad said this means caring for the future generations’ needs after meeting the requirement of the present. Under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh has adopted a policy of inclusive economy so that no one is left behind, he said.
Qazi Kholiquzzaman highlighted Bangladesh’s tremendous success in reducing poverty level to less than 24 percent from more than 50 percent a few years ago.
He credited the achievement to the visionary leadership of Sheikh Hasina.
Sheikh Fazle Fahim pointed out that Bangladesh is now one of the fast growing economies along with India and Vietnam.
