Staff Reporter :
The country has entered the era of imported Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) through starting its supply officially in pipeline at around 2:40pm on Saturday.
At present the LNG will be supplied to Chattogram only. The gas will start supplying in the national grid after all types of safety preparations and completion of pipeline installation works, Energy Division sources said. Managing Director of Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Engineer Khayez Ahmad Majumdar told reporters that LNG supply was started in the pipeline at the end of last week for testing. Today (Saturday), LNG supply was started officially at Chattogram region’s main pipeline for commercial purpose.
He said LNG will be supplied 75mmcfd (million cubic feet per day). The supply of LNG will increase gradually as it is new supply technology for the country.
On April 24, Accelerated Energy LNG floating terminal was brought to Qatar from Bangladesh. Then on May 10 it was fixed to supply LNG in pipeline in the first phase. But LNG supply in national grid was delayed due to several reasons, including leakage in pipe and technical glitch. After the repair of the Sub-Pipeline leakage (pipeline placed below 20 meters of the sea water) and technical glitch, finally the gas started to supply on Saturday, the sources said.
