Fakirapul kidnap incident: BCL men produced before court: Only one remanded

The police on Saturday produced four arrested BCL leaders and two of their accomplices in connection with the Fakirapul abduction case before the court and prayed for five days remand to interrogate the arrested people.Sub-inspector Shimul Haque Mondal (Investigation officer of the case) sought the remand. Magistrate of a Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court on hearing granted a 3-day remand to interrogate Arfan only and sent five others to jail. Arfan is reportedly a friend of Sajeeb. Srijon Gosh Sajeeb, Deputy Sports Secretary of BCL central committee, Anupom Chandra, Vice-President of Jagannath Hall unit, DU, Abdullah Al-Mamun, Student Welfare Secretary of Mohsin Hall unit, and Himel, activist of BCL Mohsin Hall unit and Dhaka College student Bappi were sent to jail. Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), student wing of ruling Awami League, expelled four of their leaders from the organisation on charge of abducting Farhad, a businessman of Fakirapul. 4 BCL leader expelledThe authorities of Dhaka University have earlier decided to suspend three Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders and an activist from the university for the same reason. The DU administration has in principle decided to suspend them, DU Acting Proctor Amzad Ali told The New Nation yesterday. Police on Friday rescued Farhad Islam, 25, from Jagannath Hall, after 15 hours of abduction. Farhad had been held hostage since 9:00pm on Thursday.According to Farhad’s statement, his friend Akhter borrowed Tk five lakh from Arfan, a childhood friend of Farhad, about six months ago. Farhad was the guarantor. Akhter was supposed to pay back the money in equal monthly installments.As Akhter stopped paying the installment after three months, Arfan asked Farhad to pay the rest of the amount, Farhad told the journalists. On Thursday night, Arfan along with 10 to 15 youths picked him up from Shahbagh and took him to Sajeeb’s room at Jagannath Hall. They forced Farhad to phone his family asking them to come with Tk 5 lakh for his release. Around 12:00noon yesterday, as his family members went to the Central Shaheed Minar area to give the money, police nabbed Arfan.On Arfan’s information, police rescued Farhad from the dormitory, a few hundred yards from the Shaheed Minar. Farhad claimed that he was beaten with iron rods and burnt with cigarette butts during his confinement. Farhad’s family has filed a case against Arfan with Shahbagh Police Station in this connection.
