The candidates backed by a syndicate, comprising some former and present leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League [BCL], is likely to be elected in new executive committee because of faulty voter list prepared under the direction of some powerful ruling party leaders, insiders said.
There was widespread speculation about the formation of this year’s BCL committee and election of the new top office bearers of the organization. In this backdrop, the Prime Minister directed to elect new BCL leadership
through direct votes of its councilors. The PM also fixed the age limit of the central leaders up to 29 years.
Interestingly, the scenario has changed after the announcement. A powerful syndicate has taken control of the whole electoral process by ‘managing’ some former and incumbent top BCL leaders, a handful of Awami League leaders and some ministers.
The BCL sources said, Liakat Sikder, former President of BCL, who visually controls the syndicate, is trying to elect his favourable candidates. Already the syndicate has influenced the incumbent leaders to announce the unit committees as their plan. The syndicate also has prepared voter list before start of the central council with inclusion of their supporters.
Some BCL leaders alleged that the ongoing president and general secretary along with some other leaders made several new voters who were not ‘qualified’ to be the councilors.
They said that there are 13 posted leaders in Rangpur District. But the central committee made 25 councilors where four posted leaders’ names were included.
Shakhil Ahmed, President of BCL, Jhenaidah District, said the unit committee was formed with 141 members. But the central committee made 25 voters without their consent. He termed it illogical and unethical.
The scenario was the same in earlier councils also. As an example, Mahmud Hasan Ripon, former President of BCL, was also the product of the syndicate.
In the last council in 2011, he worked against syndicate and tried to post his favourite men in the central committee, but failed. Later, he created another front in BCL. Vice-President of central committee Monwar Hossain Masud, Joint-Secretary Shamsul Kabir Rahat, DU unit former General Secretary Omar Sharif and Dhaka City South General Secretary Anisuzzaman Rana were his syndicate members.
Meanwhile, realizing the Ripon’s plan, the Liakat syndicate tried to prolong the council to disqualify the heavyweight men of Ripon in the central council and they did that.
The Liakat syndicate deprived the Ripon’s men of all the unit committee. As a result, Ripon failed to create votes for the council. A total of 3,000 councilors will cast their votes at the Historic Suhrawardy Udyan today (Sunday).
Sources said that the Liakat Syndicate selected five candidates to compete in the council. They are Environment Secretary Saifur Rahman Sohag, Assistant-Secretaries Jakir Hossain and Asaduzzaman Nadim, Social Welfare Secretary Kazi Enayet, and DU unit Publicity Secretary Shahed.
Ripon’s front also selected two candidates named Deputy Law Secretary Biplob Hasan Palash and Assistant Secretary Saddam Hossain.
BCL President HM Badiuzzaman Sohag, however, told The New Nation that there was no syndicate in BCL.
