The 67th founding anniversary of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of the ruling Awami League, will be observed today (Sunday) throughout the country recalling its glory and dedications towards emergence of Bangladesh.
The BCL (Formerly East Pakistan Student League) was formed on January 4, 1948 under the leadership of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, then a student leader and student of Dhaka University Law Department.
In its long journey, BCL played a very important
and courageous role in the Language Movement in 1952, the anti-Ayub movement during the days of Pakistan, the education movement in 1962, the six-point movement in 1966, and the mass upsurge in 1969, the War for the Independence of Bangladesh in 1971, the anti-Ershad movement in 1990 and in all other democratic and progressive movements.
To mark the day, BCL has chalked out elaborate programmes, including cutting the cake, bringing out procession, paying tribute to the portrait of Bangabandhu at Dhanmondi-32 and distribution of clothes among the cold-hit people. The BCL organised a rally at the base of Aparajeyo Bangla on the Dhaka University (DU) campus to mark the founding anniversary on Saturday.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader inaugurated the programme as the chief guest.
Former General Secretary of BCL Jahangir Kabir Nanok, former President Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin, former General Secretary Abdul Mannan MP, AL’s Organising Secretaries Bahauddin Nasim and Ahmed Hossain, Former General Secretary Nazrul Islam Babu, Former Presidents Bahadur Bepari, Enamul Haque Shamim and Liakat Sikder, former President and General Secretary Mahmud Hasan Ripon and Mahfuzul Haider Chowdhury Roton respectively, former President and General Secretary of DU unit Sheikh Sohel Rana Tipu and Sajjad Sakib Badsha addressed the function, among others.
BCL President Badiuzzaman Sohag presided over the programme while General Secretary Siddique Nazmul Alam moderated it.
After the rally, the organisation brought out a colourful procession started at the base of Aparjeyo Bangla and ended in front of the AL’s central office after parading different roads of the capital.
