Pabna Correspondent :
Construction work of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant experienced a setback at the outset of the project’s sand filling work.
It is alleged that a group of miscreants in the name of activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) stopped the sand filling work of a Russian contracting company Institute Orgenergostroy at the project site on April 17.
The miscreants using the name of BCL drove away the workers and snatched boats and dredgers from the site, it is alleged. The miscreants demanded toll from the officers of the project. They also threatened to set fire on machineries if the huge sum of toll was not paid. The local agent of the Russian contracting firm lodged a complaint with the Ishurdi police station. On April 26, the contractor in presence of the police started work on the site with five boats and 10 dredgers, but the miscreants shot fire and drove away the workers and snatched one dredger. If the sand filling work of the project could not be done in time, progress of other construction works would be stalled. The contracting company sought the prime minister’s urgent intervention in the matter.
If the miscreants continue their illegal activities the Russian company may stop work in the project area, sources said.
