The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) has started preparing a Poverty Database with the financial assistance of World Bank.
A pilot project titled “Development of Bangladesh Poverty Database” commenced last Saturday in Narsinghdi.
The project aims to help to understand the social and economic status of 35 million households.
It also aims to identify the right target group for various projects and to bring them under the social safety net programmes.
The World Bank will provide $40 million for preparing the database. The national statistics agency, BBS, will complete the database by 2017.
The pilot project director Dr Emdadul Haque told bdnews24.com,” The pilot project will be conducted in ward number 1 and 9 of Narsinghdi city area and in Chinishpur and Hajipur union.”
“Instead of traditional paper and pencil to scribe data, tablets will be used to record data while conducting the personal interview. The pilot project will take one week to complete,” he added
Upon successful completion of the pilot project, a countrywide survey will be conducted based on the lessons learnt in the pilot project.
On Saturday, State Minister for Water Resources Muhammad Nazrul Islam formally inaugurated the pilot project at Narsinghdi City Auditorium.
A digital poverty database will help development partners, government organisations, NGOs, donors, researchers to get latest data on poverty and to design and conduct projects targeting the most vulnerable groups.
