Anisul Islam Noor :Bangladesh Bank (BB) has started inspection of the security of the vaults of the Sonali Bank’s 66 branches. Three teams have been formed for the purpose, a BB official said it.The teams have been working under the supervision of Subhankar Saha, Executive Director of the Bangladesh Bank. Engineers and IT specialists are also in the committee.The Sonali Bank management has instructed the branches to take necessary measures about the chest security following the recent robbery that took place at a branch of the Sonali Bank.According to the sources of Central Bank, 66 branches of Sonali bank have been equipped with chests where currency of different government and non-government offices are deposited.Out of those 66 branches, 25 branches have been operating their operation in rented buildings, not equipped with enough security forces and security arms, sources said.The Bangladesh Bank has meanwhile issued a circular in this connection. The branches also have been facing crisis of skilled security guards and modern volts.Md. Mahfuzur Rahman, Executive Director of Bangladesh Bank said, since the Sonali Bank acts as agent of Bangladesh Bank, they took the issue seriously. The team while inspecting the branches would keeps them informed about the development from time to time.The central bank officials say that the state controlled Sonali Bank also transact commercially with its clients. Consequently more cash remain in the volts. But the bank officials did not pay due attention to the proper security of their branches. As a result, the incident of robbery occurred, breaking the security, at Kishoreganj branch. Therefore, it has become imperative to ensure the full-proof security.The central bank will take decisions analyzing the present structure of the vault, technology and insurance policy.
