BB governor urges NBR to introduce VAT payment through mobile

Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Atiur Rahman on Wednesday urged the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to introduce VAT payment through mobile banking with a view to adopting hassle-free payment service as well as ensuring more revenue for attaining Sustainable Development Goal (SDG).
“Country needs more revenue for implementing development programmes across the country”, said the governor while addressing a seminar on ” VAT e-Payment, Integration with IBAS and other Commercial Banks” at Institute of Diploma Engineers in the city.
Currently, three crore people are facilitating the mobile banking services for their necessary financial transactions, informed the governor. “So, the introduction of VAT payment through mobile will be a timely decision for the greater interest of the economy”, said Atiur Rahman.
The governor stressed on security of VAT e-payment system to check cyber crime. “Cyber hackers are more smart than us, so, we have to create fire wall of security to implement digital system accordingly”, said the governor.
Talking about the online VAT payment system, the governor said, Sonali Bank is the only authorized bank to receive VAT amount from the people, but it should be open for all banks.” VAT payment procedures should be more flexible for achieving the targeted yearly revenue collection of the government”, said Atiur Rahman.
Addressing as the chief guest, the governor said, most of the activities related with VAT Management are executing manually, so, it is high time to implement the real online VAT payment system for the betterment of the economy.
NBR Chairman. Md. Nojibur Rahman presided over the seminar. VAT will be one of the major future revenue earning sources of the country and the NBR is sincerely working in this regard, said NBR Chairman.
He has underscored the need for collecting more revenue from the internal resources in order to develop country’s economy. ” Globally, most of the countries are giving priority to generate income from their internal resources for further advancement of their economy, so, we have to consider this for the betterment of our country.
 Meanwhile, Bank and Financial Division Secretary Dr. M Aslam has underscored the need for raising awareness on online VAT payment. He suggested for linking the central bank as well as all commercial banks with VAT online project of NBR to get a positive result for collecting more revenue.
Finance Division Senior Secretary Mahbub Ahmed, NBR Member Farid Uddin and Barrister Jahangir Alam also spoke on the occasion.
