The central bank has asked all banks to heighten security at their branches across the country.
The instruction came on Wednesday after a daring robbery at a branch of the Bangladesh Commerce Bank Ltd at Ashulia, on the outskirts of Dhaka, a day earlier, leaving eight people, including a robber, dead.
A circular of the Banking Regulation and Policy Department said that banks had been advised to make arrangements with the local police to ensure prompt action in such cases.
Bangladesh Bank Governor Atiur Rahman has also written to the inspector general of police requesting heightened bank security.
Seven people were shot dead by the gang of robbers during the heist at the bank branch at Ashulia on Tuesday, while the mob lynched one of the robbers.
The robbers, trying to flee the scene, opened fire and exploded crude bombs when locals tried to surround them after calls were made on the loudspeaker of the local mosque to foil the heist.
Police said five of the deceased, including the bank’s manager, had been shot dead on the spot.
Two others succumbed to their bullet wounds in Savar’s Enam Medical College and Hospital in the evening.
