Bayern Munich beat Wolfsburg 2-0 on Sunday to take their second Bundesliga win in as many games thanks to first-half goals from Jamal Musiala and Thomas Muller.
Wolfsburg started well and pressed Bayern onto the back foot in the opening stages as Alphonso Davies had to clear Patrick Wimmer’s dangerous header onto the woodwork with four minutes gone.
As the match progressed, Bayern assumed control and rattled the crossbar through Benjamin Pavard following a corner kick in the 13th minute.
The hosts thought they had broken the deadlock six minutes later, but Sadio Mane’s goal was ruled offside by VAR.
Bayern continued on the front foot and eventually opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, when Musiala had time and space to drill the ball from the edge of the box past Wolfsburg goalkeeper Koen Casteels.
Wolfsburg were shocked while Bayern kept it going and doubled their lead two minutes before the break, as Muller deflected Joshua Kimmich’s shot on target to stun Casteels.
In the second half, Bayern remained in full control and kept the harmless “Wolves” at bay for the rest of the game.
Bayern scored another two goals through Dayot Upamecano and Mane, but both were overruled by the referee for offsides.
Wolfsburg tried to push forward but weren’t able to damage Bayern’s well-positioned defense.
“Wolfsburg started well, and for us it was partly about not always trying to play offensively minded. We then had a real pressure phase for 20 minutes, during which more goals could have been scored. All in all, it was a very deserved win,” said Bayern Munich head coach Julian Nagelsmann.
“We made it difficult for Bayern in the first half, the boys did a good job. Bayern are too strong for us, that’s for sure. All in all, I’m satisfied – but of course not with the result,” rued Wolfsburg head coach Niko Kovac.
Elsewhere, Mainz and Union Berlin played out a goalless stalemate.
