Business Desk :
British American Tobacco (BAT) Bangladesh evaded Taka 1,863 crore of VAT and supplementary duty in eight months, according to a document of the tax authority.
The Large Taxpayer Unit (LTU) of Value Added Tax (VAT) department under the National Board of Revenue (NBR) detected the dodging of BAT Bangladesh during the period from June 1, 2017 to February, 2018 by declaring lower sales price of low-grade cigarettes, they said.
While talking, LTU-VAT Commissioner Md Matiur Rahman said they’ve sought directive from NBR to take further measures regarding the matter.
Officials said the LTU-VAT, upon getting NBR’s go ahead directive, will be able to issue first and final demand notices against the BAT Bangladesh to realize the dodged amount.
According to the document, BAT Bangladesh has been supplying 10 sticks of low-grade cigarettes at Taka 27 each though the revenue authority directed the company to sell those at Taka 35. The company did not comply with the directive from June 1, 2017 to February, 2018 and dodged Taka 1863.80 crore of VAT and Supplementary.
