Staff Reporter :
The BNP on Tuesday demanded immediate release of Barrister Mainul Hosein terming his arrest illegal.
“The government arrested Barrister Mainul Hosein in order to cripple the ongoing democratic movement. An arrest in a defamation case is totally unheard. I am protesting the arrest and demanding his immediate release on behalf of the BNP,” said BNP Senior Joint-Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi in a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office.
The BNP leader said, there is no instance of arresting the defendant without delay in a defamation case. First, the court will issue summon to record his statement. An arrest warrant is issued if the defendant fails to appear in the court after the summon.
Barrister Mainul Hosein was arrested on Monday night from JSD President ASM Abdur Rab’s Uttara residence in a case filed with a Rangpur court.
Rizvi said, “The Prime Minister on Monday at a press conference said it is true that Barrister Mainul Hosein got bail in one case. The aggrieved persons may file additionals cases.”
Mainul has been taken to the office of the Detective Branch (DB) of police on the Mintu Road in the capital after arrest.
On Tuesday, officials produced Mainul Hosein in the Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court. Mainul Hosein pleaded for bail, but his plea was turned down.
Mainul is a former Adviser of the caretaker government.
He is facing at least six cases and got an anticipatory bail on Sunday in two defamation cases filed in Dhaka and Jamalpur.
