Barrister Mainul Hosein, a former Advisor to the Caretaker Government, has been released from Keraniganj central jail of Dhaka on Sunday after securing bail in a defamation case.
Earlier in the day, Judge of the Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka, Tofazzal Hossain, granted bail to Barrister Mainul Hosein after hearing his bail petition in the case filed by a female journalist.
On September 3, 2019, the same court sent him to jail rejecting his bail petition in the same case. Advocate Golam Mostofa Khan and Advocate Mohiuddin Chowdhury appeared in the court on behalf of Barrister Mainul Hosein.
“It’s a bailable case. And the bail petitioner, an 80-year old person, is now sick. So we are praying for his bail,” argued Advocate Golam Mostofa Khan in the hearing.
Masuda Bhatti filed the case in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate on October 21, 2018.
Barrister Mainul got ad-interim bail from High Court on October 21, 2018 in the case. Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s court also followed the High Court on May 12 this year.
In the meantime, the government appealed against the High Court order and after hearing the Appellate Division on August 21, 2019 directed Barrister Mainul Hosein to surrender in the trial court. Following the Appellate Division order he surrendered in the trial court on September 3.
A bail petition was also filed in the High Court on Sunday in the case challenging the rejection order by the trial court passed on September 3. But before hearing the petition the trial court granted him bail.
