Barishal Division clichéd the title of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman National Gold Cup U-17 Football (boys’) tournament beating Chatttogram Division by 2-1 goals in the final held on Saturday at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina graced the final as the chief guest and handed over the trophy while State Minister for Youth and Sports Zahid Ahsan Russell MP was present as the special guest.
The match rolled into extra time after the regulation time ended in a 1-1 goal draw.
After the barren first half, Touhidul Islam finally broke the deadlock scoring the first goal for Chattogram in the 48th minute while Rashedul Islam restored the parity for Barishal Division converting a penalty spot in the 66th minute of the match.
The match rolled into an extra time after both the teams failed to take the lead in the remaining period.
However Golam Rabbi scored a spectacular goal for Barishal in the 11th minute of the extra time to ensure his team’s victory.
Golam Rabbi of Barishal Division was adjudged the player of the match for his brilliant performance in the final. He also received the highest scorer award of the meet.
Besides, Mainul Islam of the champions teams was named the player of the tournament award for his consistence performance all through the tournament.
Earlier, on way to the final, Barishal beat Khulna 2-0, while Chattogram beat Mymensingh 4-3 on penalties.
