Traders assumed losing as retailers and collectors of hide and skin demanding more than price fixed by the association.
On other hand, raw hide and skin traders in Barisal are doing their business in most unhygienic condition causing health hazards to both workers and local peoples. Retail raw hide and skin traders in Barisal expressed their agitation against syndicated trading of big businessmen by fixing unjustified low price.
After visiting the Chamar Potty area, raw hide and skin trade center in Barisal city, it was learnt that both the supply and price of the raw skin in the region on Eid-ul-Azha were not bad this year.
Shahinur Rahman Shahin, Secretary of the Barisal Hide and Skin Merchants Association, said 28 members including 8 large and 20 small business houses of this association have targeted to collect total more than 80 thousand pieces of cow-skin and 20 thousand pieces of goat-skin from the region. We expecting to achieve 80-90 percent of the target, Shahin added.
Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leather goods and Footwear Exporters’ Association, Bangladesh Tanners Association (BTA) and Bangladesh Hide and Skin Merchants Association (BHSMA) jointly fixed the purchasing rate outside as per square feet of salted cowhide as Tk 60-65.
However the retail and seasonal collectors of cowhide and skin demanding Tk. 90-100 for per square feet cow-skin. Expenditures of preservation by pouring salt, labour cost and system loss would be added with purchase cost.
The collectors illogically blaming us for syndicating business after collecting hide and skin in higher price without understanding the rates declared by BTA and BHSMA in Dhaka for primarily processed material, not for totally raw ones with huge wastages, the members of Barisal hide and skin traders told.
About the health, sanitation hazards and unhygienic conditions rawhide and skin trading and processing, local BHSMA leaders said it needs huge capital and modern technological support for changing the situation and banks provide soft loans for that only to traders of Dhaka.
Although price of salt, the main preservative ingredient for primary processing of collected hide and skin almost same like previous year, but labour and transportation cost increased 25-35 percent this year, the BHSMA leaders alleged.
