BSS, NarsinIgdi :
The prospect of BARI ground-nut cultivation is bright in different char areas of the district.
Sources with Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said vast areas of sandy land across rivers bank and char areas of Narsingdi Sadar, Raipura, Belabo and Monohardi upazilas are suitable for ground-nut cultivation.
Agriculture experts in the district are encouraging farmers to bring more land under cultivation of BARI ground-nut, an oil enriched seed variety.
In 2015, Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) released the variety after a latest research in the field. This variety of ground-nut may give a yield up to 4 to 5 tonnes per hectare of land if nurtured properly.
DAE Deputy Director Lotafat Hossain said the department is encouraging the farmers and giving them logistic support for cultivating the high yielding variety. He said farmers of the areas are now showing interest to cultivate BARI ground-nut on more lands.
The DAE official said a minimum financial involvement is needed for BARI ground-nut cultivation.
