The Barguna Division of the Public Works Department has demolished the illegal structures of about 60 families by conducting a raid.
On Monday (May 23), a raid was carried out from morning to afternoon in the Pukurpar area adjacent to Barguna Sadar Hospital and these places were vacated.
In this regard, Barguna Deputy Commissioner Habibur Rahman said that the evicted families were illegally occupying government land. However, if there are real landless-homeless among them, they will be rehabilitated if they apply.
It was seen on the spot on Monday that there were about 70-80 families living on public land in Pukurpar area adjacent to Barguna Sadar Hospital.
Authorities began evictions on the land in the morning. Despite prior notice, the families have not been able to demolish their houses.
So in the morning the houses were demolished in front of their eyes.
Rickshaw puller Jamal Hossain told that, “I have been living in this house for 25 years, I have no land anywhere else.” We demand that the government make arrangements for our rehabilitation.
Another one Rokeya Begum, said my husband died 40 years ago after falling from a tree.
Since then I has been working as a sweeper living with my children. I don’t know where I will be now.
Another victim, Khokon Mia, said those of us who are relatively well-off, would be able to rent a house. But I do not know what to do. Many stoves will not catch fire today for cooking.
