A barber was beaten and poisoned to death by some miscreants at Basabati in the district town on Thursday night. The deceased was identified as Tapan Kumar Sheel, 52, son of Bimol Sheel.
Quoting Ankhi Sheel Rani, wife of Tapan Sheel, police said Tapan went missing since he went out of his shop after getting call from a youth.
Miscreants took Tapan to an abandoned house, beat him up mercilessly and poured poison into his mouth. Tapan managed to make a phone call to his wife informing her the incident.
Later, he was rescued from the house and taken to Sadar hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 8:30 pm.
Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Bagerhat Model Police Station, said the Tapan might have killed following dispute over a land with his in-laws.
Police arrested Basudeb Sarkar, 52, son of Panchkori Sarkar of Basabati area, for his suspected involvement in the killing.
