England legspinner Adil Rashid has dismissed Mahmudullah in the over before tea to end Bangladesh’s prolific third wicket stand in the first innings.
Mahmudullah (38) was lured into playing away from his body but got an edge back to Joe Root at the slips.
The teams marched off for tea with Bangladesh on 119-2 at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium on Friday.
Moeen Ali struck twice in his first over before lunch before Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah combined for a 90-run partnership to forge ahead in the second session.
There were a couple of loose shots from either batsman but they eventually eased up and steadied the ship.
They eventually grew in confidence and looked comfortable against England spinners, driving and sweeping with authority as runs began to flow from both ends
The experienced pair cracked nine boundaries between them in their 29.3-over long partnership and almost marshalled their team through the second session without losing a wicket, but Rashid gave England the much-needed breakthrough.
Tamim, however, had another on-field decision overturned after being given out by umpire Kumar Dharmasena. But third umpired reinstated the Bangladesh opener after reviewing the Sri Lankan umpire’s decision.
Bangladesh had looked steady in the beginning with Imrul Kayes mirroring the confidence gained from the ODIs and Tamim Iqbal (7 not out) cautious.
Spinner Gareth Batty induced edges but allowed too much time for the batsmen to control their shots.
But Moeen broke the Tigers’ resolve by landing a double strike at the stroke of lunch.
The wily offspinner fired in a quicker delivery that went past the outside edge of Imrul Kayes (21) and clipped the top of the offstump.
He bowled another beauty three balls later that turned and bounced to catch the shoulder of the bat of Mominul Haque (0) to go to the slips.
Earlier, spinners Taijul Islam and Mehedi Hasan Miraz snuffed off England’s tail on the morning of the second day to restrict the tourists below 300 in the first innings.
Miraz finished with a six-wicket haul on debut as England posted 293.
Taijul struck with the first ball of the day to send Chris Woakes back for 36 before a stunning catch from Sabbir Rahman at short cover saw the back of Adil Rashid (26).
Miraz grabbed his sixth when Stuart Broad (13) was caught behind on review. The England pacer had been adjudged lbw earlier but he was reinstated after a review showed the ball would have missed the stumps.
The tourists began the day with an overnight score of 258-7. Debutant spinner Mehedi Hasan Miraz dazzled on the opening day.
He returned 5-64 to become the youngest Bangladesh bowler to take five wickets on debut and the third spinner in history to pick up five wickets on his first day in Test cricket.
