Bangladesh seeks US support to help RMG industry forward

Bangladesh Ambassador to the United States Mohammad Ziauddin has sought the US support to help Bangladesh’s readymade garment industry move forward.
The Bangladesh envoy came up with the request when he called on Congresswoman (Democrat-Queens) Grace Meng in Washington on Friday, according to a message received here Sunday.
Ambassador Ziauddin also mentioned about the tremendous impact of the RMG industry which is transforming the entire society, especially empowering the women in Bangladesh. The Bangladesh Ambassador gave a general overview on the initiatives and the programmers being implemented by the present government under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He also briefed Ms Grace Meng about the actions taken by the present government since the Rana Plaza tragedy that cover a broad range of areas including legal and institutional reforms, administrative actions, launching special programmes, fire and building safety measures, follow-up and monitoring. The Congresswoman enquired about the visible impacts of the actions taken by the Government following the tragedy.
The Ambassador narrated as to how the concrete actions of the present government demonstrated forward movements towards improving occupational safety and workers’ rights situation in Bangladesh.
Congresswoman Grace Meng, also a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, gave a patient hearing to the issues flagged by the Ambassador and also about the development journey of Bangladesh particularly its tremendous success in the RMG sector.
She said that they are following the developments in the country with lots of interest, adding that she expects more interactive dialogue in the sector between the manufacturers and the workers.
Grace Meng also expressed her interest to visit Bangladesh in near future. During the meeting with the influential Congresswoman, Ambassador Ziauddin thanked her for her deep interest in Bangladesh and also for her affection for the Bangladesh diaspora in the USA.
