Bangladesh has been elected a member of the Council of the International Seabed Authority (ISA).
It is learned that this council will work for a period of four years from January 1 this year to December 31, 2024.
This information was given by Bangladesh Permanent Mission to the United Nations on Friday.
The headquarter of the International Seabed Authority is located in Kingston, Jamaica. Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the organization conducts, organizes, manages and controls all kinds of activities related to minerals in the international seabed area for the benefit of all the people of the world. The council has 37 members.
Bangladesh, with its large population, lacks land resources. Therefore, the country has identified the full utilization of marine resources for economic development, i.e. the blue economy, as a new horizon of its potential. Besides, Bangladesh is working to take full advantage of the vast maritime potential gained through the settlement of maritime disputes with Myanmar and India.
In order to fully harness the potential of the blue economy, Bangladesh needs full access to equitable rights to marine resources outside national waters, especially in ISA-controlled areas. For this, the activities of ISA are very important for Bangladesh.
By electing as a member of ISA, it is hoped that Bangladesh will have a greater chance of playing its part and protecting its own interests.
It is to be mentioned that Bangladesh is the current President of the Executive Council of the International Seabed Authority.
