Fisheries experts at a press conference here on Tuesday said Bangladesh has been marching towards self-sufficiency in fish.
They said this at a press conference arranged by the Fisheries Department with assistance of the district administration in observance of the weeklong National Fisheries Week- 2016.
The weeklong programmes include colourful rallies, releasing fish fries, discussions, seminars, awareness building and motivational activities with fresh strategies for further developing the fisheries sector.
Deputy Director (Local Government) Sultana Parveen presided over the press conference at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner.
District Fisheries Officer Dr Zillur Rahman, Senior Assistant Director of the Fisheries Department Md Abul Kalam Azad and Sadar Upazila Fisheries Officer Md Mahfuzar Rahman were present.
While narrating the tremendous success achieved in fish production, the fisheries experts said 25,500 lakh tonnes of fishes were produced last year against the annual demand of 63,000 tonnes in the district.
They said the country produced 36.84 lakh tonnes of fish during 2014-15 against the annual demand of 42 lakh tonnes as its production increases by one lakh tonne annually on the way to achieve self-reliance. The credit goes to the present government.
Abul Kalam Azad said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has put maximum emphasis on meeting nutritional demand of the people by increasing production of fish, meat, milk and egg after turning Bangladesh into a food surplus country.
