Bangladesh 9th biggest potato producing country

Director General of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) AZM Mamtazul Karim has said that Bangladesh is currently the 9th biggest potato producing country in the world and third biggest in Asia.
“Potato has become a cash crop in Bangladesh where the farmers have been producing the high quality and tasty varieties of potato,” he said while addressing the inaugural ceremony of a day-long training course on Tuesday as the chief guest.
Like last year, Bangladesh is expected to export huge quantity of high quality potato to Russia, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Nepal and other countries to earn huge foreign exchange to benefit the nation as well as farmers, he said.
The DAE organised the training course at Burirhat Horticulture Centre here under the ‘Upazila Level Technology Transfer for Farmers Training (2nd Phase) Project’ for the Sub-assistant Agriculture Officers (SAAOs).
Project Director of the ‘Upazila Level Technology Transfer for Farmers Training (2nd Phase) Project Tosaddek Hossain presided over the occasion also attended by officials of the DAE, Agriculture Information Service and Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI).
Director of the Horticulture Wing of DAE Sunil Chandra Dhar, its Rangpur Regional Additional Director Pratip Kumar Mandal and Project Coordinator for DAE Wing of the Integrated Agriculture Productivity Project (IAPP) Arif Hossain attended as special guests.
Later, the Director General of the DAE visited field level activities and success on producing vermi-compost, heap compost and trench compost fertilisers by beneficiaries of the IAPP at Jafarpur Block under Pairaband union in Mithapukur upazila.
He appreciated initiatives taken by Mithapukur Upazila Agriculture Officer Khorshed Alam and In-charge SAAO of Jafarpur Block Parimal Chandra Sarker in making IAPP activities successful there and transferring agri-technologies among farmers.
The DAE Chief also visited cultivation of the pests’ attack resistant and high yielding variety Bacillus Thuringensis (BT) brinjal by the On-farm Research Division of BARI in a field at Jafarpur Block and exchanged views with the local farmers.
While addressing the occasions, the Director General appreciated DAE officials for properly implementing the directions of Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury in making agricultural activities successful at the field levels to increase food output.
He called upon all concerned for working sincerely to increase Boro rice output and inspiring the farmers to combat pests’ attacks on the Boro crop effectively this season through adoption of the natural parching methods.
The DAE Director General left for Dhaka ending his two-day field level visits to Rangpur, Dinajpur, Nilphamari and Panchagarh districts under Rangpur and Dinajpur Agriculture Regions.
