Commentary: Bangabandhu needs no defending, his founding values of politics need defending

Mourning Bangabandhu’s tragic assassination should be the time to pause to assess what went wrong in Awami League’s politics and why. To build a democratic party is not easy. Hard history of Awami League is not to be forgotten. Politics without popular vote is not safe or good politics.
The unique judgement of the Supreme Court is about supremacy of the Constitution given by “we the people……”. It only emphasised the fact that our Liberation War was the people’s Liberation War and that people are sovereign. They deserve good governance as envisaged in the Constitution.
Remarks made in the judgement are nothing new in popular parlance and relevant for explaining the context of the judgement justifying the need of saving the Constitution. The sign of showing disrespect to Bangabandhu is not there and any such question is misleading.
The independent judiciary acts as a check against politicians because it is universally considered unsafe to trust the politicians with power.
That is why the politics is not about arrogance of power but the humility to serve the people and enjoy their confidence.
The furore created over the judgement of the Supreme Court is misplaced. The important thing is there is a sense of readiness to accept the finding of the unanimous judgement.
 The remarks are not judgement.
The game was to impose autocracy in BKSAL pattern once again.
Undemocratic politics has brought dangerous antagonism and disunity among our peaceful people. The government is depending on police power and not politics or popularity. Crimes are soaring. Weapon based politics is gaining strength despite the best efforts by the police.
It is universally accepted that the politics of popular vote is the successful panacea against politics of terrorism.
Important thing now is to concentrate on national politics for reorganising the government to be run in accordance with the Constitution. The constitutional institutions must function as defined by the Constitution. This has to be accepted that the Constitution is the blueprint of good governance. To be whimsical is not good governance. We have ample proof for that.
There is no denying that lies and falsehood about success is no success. There is no government department immune from corruption and incompetence.
The disastrous flood laid bare fully and sadly the mindless unpreparedness of the government machinery to save the affected men, women and children from absolute misery. This is so in spite of the forewarnings.
Let us give up the idea of socialist dictatorship unacceptable to the people and proved bad for our unity and peace.
Let freedom be what it means: freedom from fear.
