A book corner after the name of Bangladesh and Bangabandhu was set up at the University of Technology Brunei (UTB) marking the birth century of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md. Shahriar Alam inaugurated the Bangabandhu-Bangladesh Book Corner at a virtual event organized recently by Bangladesh High Commission in Brunei Darussalam and UTB.
The Bangladesh High Commissioner in Brunei Darussalam Nahida Rahman Shumona, Vice Chancellor of UTB Professor Dr. Dayang Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman, dean of diplomatic core, eight ambassadors, civil society and members of Bangladesh community appeared virtually in the program.
The state minister highlighted how Bangabandhu wanted to put a country newly liberated from the ravages of war into the development trajectory leading to the ‘Sonar Bangla’ as envisioned by Bangabandhu.
Despite his sad demise on 15 August 1975 and numerous setbacks in its aftermath, Alam said, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, through her dynamic leadership, has established Bangladesh today as one of the promising countries which would soon graduate to become a middle-income country from the status of least developed country.
Recognizing Brunei Darussalam as a friendly nation of Bangladesh, Alam expressed gratitude to the country for providing free treatment and vaccine to Bangladeshi expatriate workers there.
“We are grateful for His Majesty’s contribution to these people, and we hope as ASEAN Chair Brunei will come forward to work on a sustainable solution for the return of the Rohingyas,” he said.
He said the founding of Bangabandhu-Bangladesh Corner inside its library have ushered in a new era between the two friendly Asian nations, and would assuredly pave the way for deeper collaboration in areas of education, technology in particular.
The UTB VC expressed her happiness and satisfaction to have had Bangabandhu-Bangladesh Book Corner founded at the university library, decorated with books mainly on Bangabandhu and Bangladesh as well as showpieces highlighting the uniqueness and distinctness of the culture and tradition of Bangladesh.
