THE nation mourns the 43rd Shahadat Anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman today with prayers and solemnity all over the country. He was assassinated with almost all of his family members in the wee hours of that fateful night at his home in the city. It was a night of massacre and mindless bloodshed and Bangladesh mourns the occasion every year as a day of national mourning. All this happened soon after the father of the nation went for a revolutionary change under one-party government and the persons involved in killing came from the army. The real reasons for such immense tragedy remains a mystery. No serious effort was made to know the deep seated reasons.
Bangabandhu was a towering personality in the cause of the people. As a leader he was kind hearted and loved his people with all his dedication. He was easily accessible and even his political antagonists had faith in him for his generosity. As the people’s supreme leader he believed to keep the nation united for him to be the leader of the whole nation, not a particular section of the people.
He mobilised the people as a united force for the cause of democracy and freedom and when he found that was not possible under Pakistani rule he gave the call for freeing the country from the clutches of Pakistan’s autocracy. He wanted to avoid military confrontation till the last moment and restrained the Bengali armed forces. Early death of his leader Mr Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, left him politically alone to steer the politics of our people in the most crucial time after the independence.
Bangabandhu was freed by Pakistani military rulers only after Bangladesh achieved independence as inspired by him. But he found an unusually complicated situation to govern the country. He always believed that military confrontation would be avoided. In his desperation he changed the democratic course in a difficult situation.
His party Awami League in coalition with leftist parties which were active in the liberation war is now running the country. Though they say they are following the path of Bangabandhu but one thing is surely missing from their rule is his consideration of heart and mind. His love for people is to be followed earnestly. He also did not encourage the divisive forces for creating antagonism among the people for going ahead together.
We earnestly hope that the Awami League led government will be more earnest to appreciate the mind and thinking of the father of the nation to make the country a peaceful place for living together. Who was Bangabandhu is known to our people and they do not need others to tell what kind of beloved leader he was.
