Banana farming brings solvency to Rajshahi farmers

 Famers of different upazilas in Rajshahi region have gained solvency by farming banana. The cultivation of banana has been gained popularity across the region day by day. However, this year, a total of 1,496 hectares of land were brought under banana cultivation.
Among the upazilas of the district, in Motihar upazila 12 hectares, in Boalia upazila 10 hectares, in Paba upazila 225 hectares, in Mohanpur upazila 30 hectares, in Tanore upazila 1 hectares, in Godagari upazila 10 hectares, in Bagha upazila 83 hectares, in Durgapur upazila 235 hectares, in Bagmara upazila 140 hectares, in Charghat upazila 100 hectares and in Puthia upazila 650 hectares of land have been brought under banana farming.
Most of farmers were not satisfied over low price of banana in last year but this year they are hopeful to earn adequate profit by cultivating banana.
Sources at the Department of Agricultural Extension in Rajshahi said, 1,496 hectares of lands of different upazilas were brought under banana cultivation this year. The farmers cultivated banana on 1,361 hectares of lands in the previous year.
Farmers said, banana farming is also more profitable than any other crops. Different types of bananas including Anupam, Chapa, Meher Sagor, Manik have been cultivated on across the district on commercial basis, farmers added.
Normally, Banana seeds are sowed in the Bengali month of Baishakh and ripe it in Agrahayan. The banana grows well rapidly on those lands where rain water does not stand for more than a week.
If any farmer spends TK 20000-25000, he can earn TK 80000-100000 by cultivating banana on per bigha of lands. Even, it is not tough to sell banana. The cultivators can sell it very soon and earn quick profit, according to all of farmers of the district.
Farmers cultivated banana highest in Puthia upazila this year. Haji Sultan Ahmed, a banana cultivator of Baneswar area in Puthia upazila said, he cultivated banana on 5 bigha of lands for remaining favourable weather. He spent at least TK 20000-25000 for banana farming on per bigha and earned TK 70000-80000 in last year, he also said.
Shahin, another farmer of Poba upazila said that he has got well production of banana and earned huge amount of profit.
Robiul Islam, a banana cultivator of same upazila said, we had not any land for banana farming. For this reason, we took lease a piece of land to cultivate banana and became solvent. Generally, we leads livelihood by cultivating banana, he said.
Dev Dulal Dhali, a Deputy Director at DAE in Rajshahi in the regard of banana farming said, banana farming is a profitable crop than the other crops. If farmers invest only some amount of money, they can be solvent very easily. He also hoped that the farmers will get more profit if no natural disaster occurs.
