Ban on fishing in Kaptai Lake

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Rangamati in an executive order banned all kinds of fishing in the Kaptai Lake from today’s midnight for the three months.
Apart from deploying coast guards at vulnerable points of the lake, workforces of Kaptai Lake Development and Marketing Project (KLDMP) will remain vigil in the lake to implement the ban order, KLDMP sources said.
The Kaptai Lake Development and Marketing Project (KLDMP), the largest man-made reservoir in the south-east Asia, a unit of Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC) earned Tk. 8.79 crore in 253 days exceeding all previous records of last 50 years, Commander Mainul Islam, Project Manager of KLDMP said yesterday .
KLFDMP earned Tk. 1.80 croe in 2013-14 fishing season, highest in the history of depth being 35 meters, detailed SSO, saying it is 128 kilometers (km) long and 28 km wide.
The indigenous fish species are on the edge of gradual extinction in the Kaptai lake due to indiscriminate use of harmful pesticides and chemical fertilizers in cropland on both banks of the lake, random fishing with fine nets and deposition of silt in the lake, largest manmade reservoir in the south-east Asia, the Senior Scientific Officer (SSO) of Rangamati River Research Institute, a sister concern of Kaptai lake Development and Marketing Project of Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation, AKM Saiful Islam said.
