Bail to Apan Jewellers owners stayed

The Supreme Court on Monday stayed till December 21 a High Court verdict that granted bail to three owners of Apan Jewellers– Dildar Ahmed, Gulzar Ahmed and Azad Ahmed– in three separate

money laundering cases. Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice M Iman Ali passed the order following three separate petitions filed by the government seeking stay on the High Court verdict.
Deputy Attorney General Motahar Hossain Sazu told that Dildar, Gulzar and Azad cannot get released from jail following the Supreme Court order.
The government will file three leave-to-appeal petitions with the Supreme Court by December 21 challenging the High Court verdict, he said.
On December 14, the High Court granted bail to three owners in the money-laundering cases.
The High Court bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Shahidul Karim passed the order after hearing three separate pleas filed by the accused seeking bail in the cases.
Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) on August 12 sued three owners of Apan Jewellers on the charge of money laundering in importing about 15 maunds of gold.
Three separate cases were lodged with Dhanmondi, Ramna and Uttara Police Stations, while two lawsuits were lodged with Gulshan Police Station in this connection.
According to the prosecution statements, owners of the Apan Jewellers imported around 15 mounds of gold and diamond by “dodging tax”.
Apan Jewellers’ owners Dildar Ahmed Selim, father of the double-rape case accused Shafat Ahamed, has been made accused in three cases while Gulzar Ahmed and Azad Ahmed in two separate cases following the directives of National Board of Revenue.
The three were sent to jail on October 28 after they surrendered to the trial court.
