UNB, Dhaka :
Ganatantrik Bam Morcha, a platform of left-leaning parties, on Thursday threatened to wage a movement if the government hikes the gas tariff.
The leaders of the platform issued the threat while staging a demonstration near the Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry in protest against the government’s move to increase the gas price.
The leaders and activists of Bam Morcha took out a procession towards the ministry at 12 noon to register their protest against the gas tariff-hike move, said a press release. As the procession reached near the ministry, police intercepted them, forcing them to stage a demonstration there.
In August, Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company proposed increasing the gas price for domestic users by around twofold while Petrobangla proposed raising bulk gas price from Tk 6.29 per cubic metre to Tk 10.29. Later, Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) assured that the price would be adjusted after a series of justified calculations and the decision would be made within the next 90 days. But, BERC is yet to come up with its final decision in this regard.
Speaking at the gathering, Bam Morcha leaders said there is no logic to give any proposal for raising the gas prices when all the gas companies are making huge profits. They alleged that the government is trying to raise the gas prices to create scope for corrupt people to indulge in plundering.
