The National Board of Revenue (NBR) will observe the VAT Day and VAT Week in the capital and other divisional cities with the theme ‘Mujibbarsher Ongikar, EFD te NBR’ (Promise of the Mujib Year, NBR at EFD) to create awareness among the people.
The revenue board has chalked out various programmes to hold the National VAT Day on December 10 and the National VAT Week from December 10-15 to motivate and make aware the common people to pay VAT.
Speaking at a press briefing at the conference room of the board on Wednesday, NBR Chairman Abu Hena Md. Rahmatul Muneem said, “NBR is going to prepare online-based tax system under VAT Online Project to ensure good governance and transparency in collecting revenue.
“Major tasks of the three modules of the online project-online, return submission and E-payment— are nearly finished and the works of other 7/8 modules will be ended by next June,” he added.
“Electronic Fiscal Device Management System (EFDMS) has already been introduced to preserve accounts and to issue chalan at retail, wholesale and service level through online software. The service is being conducted by installation around 1000 Electronic Fiscal Device (EFD) and Sales Data Controller (SDC) machines in Dhaka and Chattagram primarily,” he said.
The number of the installation of the EFDs will be increased gradually, he said.
He said that some 101 buyers would be awarded every month through lottery once they deposit their EFD invoices and this move would further motivate themselves to go for more buying through EFDs.
The NBR chairman further said, “NBR has moved one step forward to digitalise the board by introduction of the EFDMS.”
The NBR collected Tk 42528.09 crore from Value Added Tax (VAT) in the last five months of the current fiscal year against the target of Tk 128873 crore with 5.21 percent negative growth in the sector.
Economists opined that the main reason behind the negative growth in the VAT, around 50 percent revenue collecting sector, is failure of the NBR to make the VAT system automated fully.
Like the previous years, the highest nine VAT paying organizations at national level will be awarded today (Thursday) this year. The Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal and FBCCI President Sheikh Fazle Fahim will be present as chief guest and special guest respectively at the award giving ceremony at the conference room of the board.
Besides, three organizations of production, services and business sectors at district level will be awarded by the concerned Commissionarate.
Initiative has also been taken to publish and air documentaries and ads in various print and online media as well as in the radio and TV channels to create awareness among the taxpayers centering the VAT Day and VAT Week.
The NBR will not hold rally to avoid big gathering this year due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and to reduce expenditure.
