Drivers of CNG-run auto-rickshaws in Dhaka have threatened to go on a daylong strike on Mar 14 in protest against alleged harassment meted out to them by Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA)’s mobile courts. Dhaka District Four-Stroke Auto-rickshaw Drivers Association threatened the stir at a press conference on Saturday.
The association’s Office Secretary Md Abu Wahab said, “Several drivers are regularly punished, jailed and fined by BRTA mobile courts though there is no such provision in traffic rules.”
“The mobile courts are also regularly harassing the
drivers in the pretext of parking violation,” he said.
The association also decided to submit memoranda to transport ministry, BRTA and the DMP commissioner demanding an end to this “harassment”.
Wahab said if their demands were not met by Mar 11, they would go on a strike from 6am to 6pm on Mar 14.
The BRTA through its mobile courts has launched a drive to stop auto-rickshaw drivers from overcharging the passengers. The drive has been launched following complaints that auto-rickshaw drivers were not adhering to the new fare structure fixed by the authority.
