Australia with 225 runs for two in the 2nd Test against Bangladesh at Chittagong were trailing by 80 runs with eight wickets in hands in the 1st innings after Day-2 on Tuesday.
David Warner and Peter Handscomb were in the crease when the bails were drawn for the 2nd day.
Opening the 1st innings on the 2nd day, Australia collected 111/2 in 34 overs at tea and played 30 more overs in the last session to add 114 runs more without losing any other wicket for their collection of 225 for 2 in 64 overs where Warner, Handscomb and skipper Steven Smith hammered a fifty each.
Dhaka-Test centurion Warner played 170 balls and fired four boundaries for unbeaten 88 runs and Handscomb added another unbeaten figure of 69 off 113 balls, including five boundaries.
Smith was the other notable scorer with 58 off 94 balls, including eight boundaries, before being bowled out by spinner Taijul Islam.
The Tigers’ bowling efforts proved fruitless throughout the entire 3rd session as Warner along with Handscomb carried their 3rd pair contribution to unbeaten 127 in 36.1 overs, starting their composure after Smith’s departure at 98/2 in 28.1 overs.
However, the fate of the game could have been different had Bangladesh not missed two close chances.
Mominul Haque dropped a catch of Warner at short leg off Miraz in 38.6 overs. Mominul was left overbalanced as he anticipated a glance possibly and moved to his left as opposed to staying
low and still. He hastily stuck his right hand out, but could not cling on to the chance.
Mushfiqur Rahim missed a stumping chance to send out Warner off Mehedi Hasan Miraz when the Aussies were at 201/2 in the 56.1 overs.
Miraz delivered to Warner who charged down the track leaving the stumps, but the ball went flatly low and hit the keeper’s right pad as it was too low for the keeper.
Australia suffered an early scare to progress to 15/1 in 4 overs at lunch as pace bowler Mustafizur Rahman dismissed Matthew Renshaw (4 off 7b; 1×4) who was caught behind by skipper Mushfiqur Rahim at 5/1 in 1.3 overs.
The Fizz did the job with the 3rd ball of his 1st over in the innings to make the first breakthrough for Bangladesh.
But skipper Steve Smith along with Warner commenced the repair job coming out after lunch, building up a 93-run partnership in 27.2 overs in the 2nd stand.
Mustafiz and Taijul took one wicket each for 45 and 50 runs in 10 and 15 overs respectively.
Earlier, the Tigers resumed the first innings on the 2nd day with their overnight collection of 253/6 in 90 overs and played 23.2 more overs with their four wickets in the first session to add 52 runs more.
Nathan Lyon captured the last wicket of Taijul Islam, taking his tally to 7 in the innings, who was caught by Steven Smith at 305 in 113.2 overs.
In the day’s first session of Bangladesh 1st innings, Nathan Lyon bowled out Mushfiqur at 265/7 in 97.2 overs.
Mushfiqur was out after scoring 68 runs, facing 17 balls on the day’s 1st session to add 6 runs more with his overnight collection of 62 off 149 balls including five boundaries.
Lyon delivered a loopy ball which turned straightaway to Mushfiqur who pressed forward the bat but the ball spun in very sharply to take the inside edge and whipped the bails off.
Lyon captured five wickets on the first day and he struck Mushfiqur with his 2nd ball for the first breakthrough on Day-2.
All-rounder Nasir Hossain fell short by five runs for a fifty as he was caught behind by Matthew Wade off Ashton Agar after scoring 45 off 97 balls, including five boundaries, when the scoreboard was showing 293/8 in 110.1 overs.
Overnight batsman Nasir faced 64 balls on the day’s first session to add 26 runs more with two boundaries, starting the day with 19 off 33 balls including three boundaries.
Mushfiqur and Nasir shared a partnership of 43 runs in 16 overs in the 7th stand before the former left the crease.
Mehedi Hasan Miraz (11 off 45b) was another double digit scorer for the Tigers on the day.
