AUST teacher put on remand over sexual harassment

Court Correspondent :The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka on Wednesday placed Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST) Assistant Proctor Mahfuzur Rashid Ferdous on a two-day remand in a case filed against him on the charge of sexual harassment. Magistrate Delwar Hossain of the CMM Court passed the order on Wednesday afternoon after hearing on a seven-day remand plea of police.Shamim Ahmed, Investigation Officer of the case and also a Sub-Inspector of Kalabagan Police Station in the capital sought the remand to interrogate the teacher in connection with sexual harassment of students of the university.Earlier, police arrested AUST Assistant Proctor Mahfuzur Rashid from Eskaton Garden area of the city at about 2:30am and later produced him to the court. The students of the university have raised allegations of sexual harassment against the teacher. He has been harassing the female students of the university for a long time, the students claimed.The students have been demonstrating in front of the university’s Tejgaon campus since Saturday, demanding his punishment. They have decided to boycott academic activities until his dismissal. Former AUST student Rashid became a teacher in 2001 married Lubaba Bashar Momy, who is also a teacher of the same university.
