The Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 of Dhaka on Thursday completed recording the depositions of Awami League Advisory Committee member Suranjit Sengupta, MP, in the August 21 grenade attack cases.
Judge Shahed Nuruddin recorded the depositions of Suranjit at his makeshift court adjacent to the central jail of the city, while the defence lawyers cross-examined him on Thursday.
As a prosecution witness and victim of the grenade attack, the ex-minister said, BNP leader Tarique Rahman and several others were involved with the August 21, 2004 grenade attack. Later, the court fixed December 22 to record the depositions of more witnesses in the cases. The court so far recorded the depositions of 203 prosecution witnesses.
A number of grenades were exploded in an Awami League rally in the Bangabandhu Avenue in Dhaka on the day, when the party was in the opposition. The attack left 24 people, including former President Zillur Rahman’s wife Ivy Rahman- dead and 73 injured. Grenade splinters also impaired the hearing capacity of the incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Two cases, one for murder and injuries, while another for explosions were filed after the deadly incident.
