Attorney General Mahbubey Alam dies of Covid-19

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam died on Sunday after he had contracted with the novel coronavirus.
He breathed his last at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka where he was under treatment.
His son Sumon Mahbub confirmed the news and posted a status in his facebook wall saying that “My father Attorney General Mahbubey Alam died at 07:25 pm”.
Earlier on the day, his son-in-law Sheikh Mohammad Reajul Hoque citing the doctors of the Combined Military Hospital on Sunday evening said that Attorney General’s condition was critical. “The doctors are trying,” said Reajul, who is also a Supreme Court lawyer.
President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina condoled the death of Attorney General Mahbubey Alam.
Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain and Law Minister Anisul Huq also condoled his death.
Mahbubey Alam was the Chief Legal Officer of the State for the longest time in the history of Bangladesh. He was 71 years old. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
He was hospitalised with a high temperature on September 4 and later tested positive of COVID-19. He remained in hospital care ever since.
The law minister had earlier said Mahbubey Alam had a rapid pulse. He had the problem earlier but never informed the doctors about it, Anisul had said. The minister had also said the last coronavirus test on Mahbubey Alam had come back negative.
Mahbubey Alam has been the Attorney General of the country since 2009. A former president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, he began practicing law in 1975.
He was born on 17 February 1949 in the village of Mouchhamandra at Lauhajang upazila of Munshiganj district.
He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree with Honors in Political Science and Masters of Arts in Public Administration from the University of Dhaka in the year 1968 & 1969 respectively. He had his LLB degree from the same University in 1972.
He was enrolled as an Advocate with Bangladesh Bar Council in 1973 and subsequently was awarded permission to practice in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh in January, 1975. In due course he became members of the Dhaka Bar Association and Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association.
He got himself enrolled as an Advocate of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh in 1980. As a mark of recognition to his outstanding professional performance, he was enrolled as a ‘Senior Advocate’ of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh in 1998.
Mahbubey Alam obtained diploma in Constitutional Law and Parliamentary Institutions & Procedure in 1979 from the prestigious Institute of Constitutional and Parliamentary Studies at New Delhi in India. He held the office of the Additional Attorney General for Bangladesh from November 15, 1998 to October 4, 2001.
He served as the elected Secretary for the term 1993-1994 and President for the term 2005-2006 of the Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association. He also served as the elected Member of the Bangladesh Bar Council for the term 2004-2007. He had been holding the highest Constitutional law office of the Country i.e. Attorney General for Bangladesh since January 13, 2009.
He held the office of the Chairman of Bangladesh Bar Council. Mahbubey Alam was a widely travelled person. He attended many important International seminars, symposium and conferences on law in India, Srilanka, France, USA, Egypt, United Kingdom, Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea etc. In home he also attended many International Seminars and Symposium and represented the lawyers’ community of the country.
