Brahmanbarhia Correspondent :
The rail communication between Dhaka and Chittagong along with Sylhet was cut off after a passenger train derailed at Brahmanbarhia on Sunday afternoon after a portion of rail track was removed allegedly by a group of blockade supporters.
“At least 10 passengers were injured in the accident, as six compartments of the inter-city ‘Joyontika Express’ derailed near the Paghachang station around 2pm. Several others also received injuries when they jumped off the train in panic,” said Brahmanbarhia Railway Station’s Assistant Master Moinul Hossain.
Railway officials claimed that the train was derailed after saboteurs removed sections of railway track during BNP-led 20-party alliance’s blockade and hartal.
Sayedur Rahman, Assistant Director of Bangladesh Railway, said, “The saboteurs removed sections of the railway track, which caused the derailment of the inter-city train. We are trying our best to restore the rail link.”
A relief train from Akhaura began rescue just after accident, but the rail link could not be resumed till the time of filing of this report at 8:00pm yesterday.
The railway authorities also could not say when the train links might resume.
In another incident, a good train was derailed in Iswardi of Pabna district yesterday.
The railway authorities, however, could not tell the reason behind the accident immediately.
Divisional Manager of Bangladesh Railway Mosarraf Hossain said, ” The train carrying food grains was going from Iswardi to Dowlatpur. Four bogies of the train were derailed suddenly. We are trying to know the reason behind the accident.”
He claimed that the schedule of passenger train was not disrupted due to the derailment.
