BGMEA’s former President Atiqul Islam is optimist about getting nomination from ruling Awami League to contest in the Dhaka North City Corporation election scheduled for February 28.

He is also hopeful about his chance to become the DNCC mayor through the election.
“I got nomination from Awami League last year to contest in the by-polls. Unfortunately the election was not held timely. So, this year I am hopeful to get AL nomination for mayor post,” Atiqul Islam told The New Nation on Friday.
He also expressed his hope to win the polls.
“I have taken part in various pro-people programmes in last 11 months. This month is final round of my marathon race and I am hopeful of getting people’s support and vote,” he said.
The mayor post fell vacant after former mayor of the DNCC Annisul Huq died on November 30, 2017.
After his death, the Election Commission declared schedule last year to hold by-election on February 26, 2018. But later the schedule was stayed by Court rule following a writ petition about voter lists of the jurisdiction.
According to AL office sources, Businessman Adam Tamiji Haque and National Disable Sports Council Secretary General Major (retd) Md. Yead Ali Fakir also bought nomination papers from the ruling party besides Atiqul Islam.
When contacted, AL Presidium Member and Local government nomination board’s member Colonel (retd) Faruk Khan told The New Nation on Friday, “As per past days record, the previously nominated person got party ticket finally if the (previous scheduled) election was suspended in any reason. But the final decision will take the nomination board’s meeting on Saturday.”
He said the people of the city as well the country like to vote for Boat. The Boat symbol will win in the polls.
Among the other mayor post aspirants, Adam Tamiji Haque is actively trying to get the party nomination.
He is trying to attract party high command’s attention by public relation and good work, posturing and other activities.
According to the EC, councillor election of the newly added 18 wards in DNCC and another 18 wards in DSCC also will be held in the same day.
