The High Court (HC) on Tuesday granted bail to Professor Asif Nazrul Islam of Dhaka University in two cases filed under Section 57 of the Information Technology Act and on charge of defamation.
The HC bench of Justice Miftah Uddin Chowdhury and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman passed the order after hearing the bail petitions filed by the DU Professor.
On November 23 in 2017,
Syed Asaduzzaman Minar, nephew of Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan, filed a case at Madaripur Sadar Police Station under Section 57 of the Information Technology Act, and the same day, Faruq Khan, member of Madaripur District Council and cousin of Minister Shahjahan Khan, filed another case in the Court of Madaripur Chief Judicial Magistrate Md Zakir Hossain against Professor Asif Nazrul on charge of defamation.
Professor Asif Nazrul’s lawyer submitted bail prayers on his behalf though the DU Professor was present at that time.
Advocate Asaduzzaman took part in the hearing on behalf of Professor Asif Nazrul while Deputy Attorney General Sheikh A K M Moniruzzaman Kabir stood for the State.
It has been stated in one case that Asif Nazrul posted in his facebook wall false information about Shahjahan Khan regarding recruitments for Chittagong Port.
Asaduzzaman Minar submitted written allegation against Asif Nazrul to the Madaripur Police Station. The matter was sent to the Home Ministry for further proceedings.
Asif Nazrul said, the face book status was posted from a fake account opened using his name. He warned others several times about that fake account.
