Question: Quality education is being flourished and promoted day by day in different countries in the world. What is your opinion about the position of our country in this regard?
Dr. Sadeq: Dr. Sadeq: I would like to thank you at the beginning of the interview. Thank you for the nice question. I think the expansion of education alone is not enough, education must be of the desired quality. Unfortunately, however, this is not the general feature of higher education in Bangladesh. Here, the quality of education at some universities is good. In this regard, I would like to refer to Asian University of Bangladesh (AUB), since I am from this university. AUB has been trying hard to provide quality education. If we look at the end products, the graduates of this university are doing very well in the job market, both in the private as well as public sectors. I am happy to mention that some of them are teaching in universities of different developed countries of the world including Australia; some others are holding high positions in the corporate sectors in those countries including Germany, and they are working in other sophisticated positions.
Question: What roles can a university play to improve the skilled human resource in a country?
Dr. Sadeq: There is a need for a detailed discussion to talk about this, but I would mention some important things, which are needed for quality education. These include, quality curricula, quality teachers, rich library, use of technology, a congenial environment, research and publication, educational co-curricular activities, integration of ethical values of education and ethical campus atmosphere, and so on.
Question: Many private universities do not have their own campuses. Don’t you think that the lack of own campus with spacious premises is a barrier to quality higher education?
Dr. Sadeq: A good and education-friendly campus is needed for quality education, without which it is not possible to create a conducive environment for higher education. At AUB, we have given serious attention to this matter. We have built a ten-stored building with about 23000 sft per floor on a huge land of about ten acres at Ashulia, adjacent to Uttara Model Town, with playgrounds and free transport and also hostels for the students. AUB is fully operational at its spacious permanent campus.
Question: What are the special features of the Asian University of Bangladesh, and why should a student prefer this university for admission?
Dr. Sadeq: To answer this question, I would like to highlight some striking features of AUB: quality education, affordable cost, integration of values in the curricula, tuition fee waiver for the poor, up to 100% waiver for brilliant students, scholarships, part-time employment, full free education for the children of freedom fighters, the rich library facilities, technology-based education.
Question: There is a complaint that the private universities follow the laws and rules. What do you think about this?
Dr. Sadeq: This cannot be generalized. Quite a number of universities are fully compliant universities, except for the matter that the appointment to some high positions is yet to be made by the Hon’ble Chancellor, although the relevant universities did their part by proposing the candidates. Since they have done their part, there is no rational logic to say that this is their fault, and hence they cannot be blamed. In all these counts, AUB is 100% compliant university, by following all the rules and regulations of higher authorities.
Question: We are happy that AUB is a 100% compliant law-abiding university which provides quality education at low cost. But we find some corners are trying to discredit AUB by digital and other means. How do you see this?
Dr. Sadeq: I am happy that you have asked this question. Yes, there are some people who do this. The truth is that whenever any noble thing is done, there will be some criticism. This is the norm irrespective of time and space. Besides this normal truism, there are some ill-motivated people who are playing this game purposely. Some do it for putting pressure on AUB for getting undue benefits from AUB, some corrupt employees who have been released for their corruption do it for taking revenge, some for jealousy, some for nasty competitive motive, etc.
