Lakshmipur Police Lines Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Abdul Jalil was murdered, claims the district’s Superintendent of Police Shah Mijan Shafiur Rahman.
He said, the man did not die from gunshot wounds sustained after his sub-machine gun (SMG) went off accidentally in the early hours of Friday.
Jalil, 50, was shot at around 12:30am at a tea stall in front of the Police Lines. Doctors on duty declared him dead around 1am after he was rushed to the Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital.
Police on Friday morning said, the ASI received the
wounds when his own firearm made an accidental discharge.
But after the autopsy, SP Rahman told reporters, “Jalil was murdered.”
After his funeral prayer at the Police Lines in the afternoon, Shah Mijan Shafiur Rahman told a press briefing, “The autopsy found a shotgun bullet inside Jalil’s body. But he was carrying an SMG. No bullet was shot from that.”
He said, locals had gone on a protest march and blocked the road on Thursday, demanding electricity in Raipur Upazila.
Jalil went there along with other police personnel from the Police Lines to bring the situation under control, he added.
SP Rahman claimed that Jalil had been shot while taking tea at a stall in front of the Raipur Police Station sometime after the road was cleared.
Responding to a question, he said: “It cannot be said before the investigation is over whether the bullet that hit Jalil was from the arms of a police personnel or a criminal’s.”
Jalil was a member of the reserved force at the Police Lines.
