Kishoreganj-1 polls: Ashraf’s brother, sister collects nomination forms

Syed Shafayetul Islam and Syeda Zakia Noor Lipi, brother and sister of deceased Awami Leauge (AL) leader Syed Ashraful Islam, have collected nomination forms from the Awami League office aiming to contest in the polls for the Kishoreganj-1 constituency which fell vacant after their brother’s demise.

Syed Ashraf, collected the form on behalf of Shafayetul Islam on Wednesday, the first day of nomination distribution, and on Friday Ana Milky, cousin of Syeda Zakia Noor Lipi, collected nomination form on behalf of Lipi, from the party chief’s Dhanmondi offices.
Not only Syed Ashraful Islam’s brother and sister, more than four AL leaders have collected nomination papers. They are Kishoreganj district Awami League Joint-General Secretary Shah Azizul Haque, President Abdul Hamid’s son Russell Ahmed, swechehhasebok League’s Assistant Library Affairs Secretary MA Hannan and Kishoreganj District Awami League member Moshiur Rahman.
Syed Ashraf, who was LGRD and Public Administration Minister, was re-elected from the Kishoreganj-1 seat in the December 30 polls.
However, the veteran AL leader breathed his last on January 3, on the day the elected MPs in the 11th Parliamentary Elections took oath.
On January 22, the Election Commission announced that the polls in the seat will be held on February 28.
As per the polls schedule, the last date of nomination papers submission is January 31 while the scrutiny thereof will be held on February 3. The deadline for withdrawal of candidature is February 10.
“The voting in Kishoreganj-1 will be considered as the general election since newly elected Member of Parliament (MP) from the seat Syed Ashraful Islam died before taking oath,” EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed said while announcing the date.
