Arum cultivation increasing in Rangpur Divn

The farmers of different areas in Rangpur Division are showing their interest in commercial cultivation of arum, locally known as Kachu due to remarkable profit.
Earlier, most of the farmers of the region cultivated arum on limited basis just for meeting local demands. But the scenario has changed now as in recent years the farmers are cultivating the vegetable commercially and supplying their produce to different parts of the country including the capital, sources said.
Thousands of farmers under the division including Rangpur, Nilphamari, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Lalmonirhat and Dinajpur are engaged in the farming of different varieties of arum on both their homesteads and other lands.
Its cultivation process is easier as it does not require much fertilisers or frequent use of pesticides, Farmers alleged.
Matin Mia, a farmer of Ranipukur area of Mithapukur upazila in Rangpur said that he has been cultivating arum on his land for the last few years and earning satisfactory profit.
Abdur Rahim Basunia, another farmer of Choraikhola village of Nilphamari Sadar upazila said he cultivated Latiraj kachu( a variety of arum) on around 45 decimals of lands this season and have already witnessed excellent yield. He has so far earned Tk 20,000 from its sale in markets.
According to DAE D,Sharul Haqe sayed commercial cultivation of arum is on the rise in the region owing to huge demands and profit. The soil of many areas under the division is also suitable for its farming as well. DAE also helps the grower by providing them necessary suggestions and other assistances in order to enhance its farming across the region, sources added.
