A weeklong solo tapestry exhibition of artist Tajul Islam began on Saturdayat Gallery Cosmos in the capital’s Mohakhali area.
President of Bangladesh Enterprise Institute Farooq Sobhan and Spanish Ambassador to Bangladesh Alvaro de Salas jointly inaugurated the exhibition arranged by the Gallery Cosmos.
Some 40 artworks are being displayed in the exhibition that will remain open from11 amto8 pmtillOctober 13.
Addressing the event, Farooq Sobhan said Tajul Islam has developed his own style and design. “I was struck by his use of colours and imagery and the visual impact of his work.”
Though there are influences of noted artist Rashid Chowdhury in the work of Tajul Islam, clear distinctions exist between the works of Tajul and Rashid Chowhdury, he added.
Tajul, who worked with the celebrated artist Rashid Chowdhury in his studio from 1965 to 1979, has continued in the footsteps of his master, Farooq Sobhan told the audience.
Spanish Ambassador described Tajul’s tapestry artworks as being gloriously beautiful. “The colour of his (Tajul) art provokes emotions – emotion of peace and serenity-and then you can relate to it.”
Artist Tajul Islam in his address pointed out his tapestry artworks are a combination of forms and colours, which are completely handmade.
Cosmos Group and UNB Chairman Amanullah Khan in his opening remarks said Gallery Cosmos is sustained by the belief that art acts as a powerful catalyst for social change and can be instrumental in promoting peace and understanding between nations through building bridges among different peoples and cultures. He stressed that art constitutes a most valuable cultural asset ofBangladesh.
