Arson attacks, vandalism mark 2nd day hartal

Staff Reporter :The second day of nationwide 72-hour hartal along with the ongoing blockade, enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance, passed off amid arson attacks and vandalism across the country on Monday.The vehicular movement was very poor in city and inters districts while The long distance vehicular movement was virtually off on the highways, while playing of all modes of transport in the city was as usual. The movement of trains and water vessels were almost normal amid schedule collapse. Besides, the hartal supporters also exploded bombs in different districts causing hamper to regular civic life.More than 30 vehicles, including 12 passenger buses, were torched by the hartal and blockade supporters in the country. The miscreants also vandalized over 45 vehicles in the city and several districts during the hartal.Around 40 people were reportedly hurt, including seven burnt injuries, during the hartal and the nonstop blockade programmes, police, doctors and local sources said.The hartal began from 6:00am on Sunday and it will continue till 6:00am Wednesday. In the capital, a gang of miscreants also torched a double-decker BRTC bus near Mirpur Section-11 around 7:35pm. Another bus of Pallabi Super Service was torched near Government Bangla College in Mirpur Section-1 around 7:45pm. On the other hand, a gang of miscreants exploded at least 10 crude bombs in front of the Metropolitan Judge’s court area around 12:00pm. No one, however, was injured in the blasts, said Mofakkharul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (prosecution) of the court said.The miscreants also hurled hand bombs at the NSI office at Segunbagich in the city at around 8:00pm. Another gang of miscreants also set fire to a bus and exploded at least three petrol bombs near Dayaganj intersection around 11:30am.In Chittagong, some crude bombs were exploded in front of new building of Chittagong Court around 3:00pm.In Gaibandha, at two passenger buses and a goods-laden truck were torched in Palashbari upazila and another two trucks were vandalized in Gobindaganj upazila. In Rajbari, some miscreants set on fire at a local bus in front of Doulodia River Police Station. At least two persons received burn injuries while the miscreants hurled some petrol bombs at a bus in front of the Shahid Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital in Bogra district in the afternoon. In Lakkhipur, at least four persons received burn injuries while the miscreants hurled three petrol bombs at a CNG-auto rickshaw in front of the Women College in the district town in the morning. In Feni, pickets exploded at least four cocktails at Takia Bazar in the district town around 3:00pm.In Rajshahi, miscreants set fire at two goods-laden trucks at Katakhali in Rajshahi district. In Gazipur, hartal supporters torched a bus of Balaka Paribahan near at Board bazaar area around 10:00am.In Sylhet, miscreants hurled at least two cocktail bombs in front of the central bus terminal around 7:30am. In Barisal, the hartal supporters vandalized at three auto rickshaws on the Barisal-Bananipara road around 8:30am, said our district correspondent. In Sirajganj, Jamaat-Shibir men blasted two cocktails targeting police in Khokshabari area on Sirajganj-Kazipur road around 9:00am.Earlier on January 30, BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed announced the hartal demanding mid-term polls under a caretaker government, protesting mass arrest, filing ‘false’ cases and killing of opposition leaders and activists.
