Arson attacks on rise in Sylhet

There has been witnessed an alarming rise in the incidents of petrol bomb attack on vehicles in Sylhet during the hartal and blockade enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance though the law enforcing agencies have taken some measures to curb violence.
A total of 10 people injured in petrol bomb attacks have been admitted to the Sylhet Medical College Hospital in the last 42 days since after the blockade that started on January 6, said the hospital sources.
Medical officer at SOMCH, said of the petrol bomb victims were undergoing treatment at the ward while the rest were discharged after treatment at the ward and outdoor. He said the number of arson victims this year exceeded the figure of those during the political unrest in 2013.
A total of 5 arson victims were given treatment at the ward at that time.
Most of the burn victims are the breadwinners of their families. They are seeing an uncertainty over their future and they do not know how they would recover and support their families.
Of them, five people were injured by petrol bombs in last two days (Sunday and Monday) in three attacks in Sylhet.
Some unknown miscreants riding on three bikes blasted cocktails at Upshahor, Subidbazar and Lalabazar area around 9:00 pm on Wednestday. Leaving Truck driver injured.
Miscreants huled two crude bombs targeting the CNG-run auto rickshaw in Mirer Maidan area around 1pm, leaving two injured.
Four people, including two children, suffered injuries as miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at a microbus and exploded cocktails in the Sylhet city on Monday.
Among the injured, two children were identified as–18-month-old Nasir and Hafizur Rahman.
Witnesses said, miscreants hurled petrol bomb at a parked microbus in front of Aarong shopping mall at Nayasharak area around 12:30pm, leaving a woman injured who was inside the vehicle.
The woman was admitted to a private hospital.
On the other hand, some unknown miscreants riding on three bikes blasted cocktails at Mirer Maidan area around 1:04pm, leaving two kids and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver injured.

Some crude bombs were exploded and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw was vandalised in the Bandarbazar area of the city in the morning. Getting information, Kotwali police rushed to the spot and dispersed the group by firing blank shots. Police also arrested two persons from the area.
Earlier at around 10am, activists of Islami Chhattra Shibir brought out a sudden procession in the city’s Kumarpara area and vandalized 3 vehicles. Some cocktail were also exploded there.
Witnesses said, at around 10:00am, a group of men, allegedly Shibir activists, gathered at the Kumarpara point and vandalised a truck and 2 CNG-run auto-rickshaws. The group fled after exploding some cocktails at the spot.
