Arrest warrants issued against Mizan’s wife, brother

A Dhaka court has issued arrest warrants against former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Mizanur Rahman’s wife and younger brother on charge of amassing illegal wealth.
Dhaka Senior Special Judge KM Imrul Kayes on Sunday issued the warrants after taking the charge sheets against Sohelia Anar Ratna and Mahbubur Rahman Swapan into cognizance, said Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Public Prosecutor Mahmudur Rahman Jahangir.
The court also transferred the case to the Dhaka Special Judge Court-4, and fixed March 3 for the next hearing.
The suspended DIG and his nephew Sub-Inspector Mahmudul Hasan of Dhaka’s Kotwali Police Station are currently in jail in the corruption case.
On Januryt 30, 2020, the Investigation Officer (IO) of the case and ACC Director Manjur Morshed submitted the charge sheets against them to the court.
In 2018, the ACC launched a probe into the wealth of DIG Mizan, after he was relieved of duties following allegations of torturing a woman.
On June 20,2019, a Dhaka court ordered that DIG Mizan’s assets be confiscated and bank accounts should be frozen.
On June 24 of the same year, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Mizanur Rahman and three of his family members for amassing illegal wealth worth TK3.28 crore.
Other accused in the case include DIG Mizan’s wife Sohelia, his younger brother Mahbubur and nephew Mahmudul.
