UNB, Feni :
A court here on Sunday issued a warrant for the arrest of BNP leader Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury Minar, the prime accused in the Fulgazi upazila parishad chairman Ekramul Haque murder case.
Acting Judge of the Chief Judicial Magistrate Alamgir Muhammad Faruque passed the order as Minar did not surrender before the court in the stipulated time in compliance with a Supreme Court order.
On July 20, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court stayed the bail granted by the High Court to the BNP leader and asked him to surrender before the trial court within next two weeks. On July 17, Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury Minar was freed from jail after an HC bench granted bail to him on health grounds on July 15.
Meanwhile, his counsel Mohammad Abdul Mannan Khan said Minar could not turn up before the court yesterday as he is undergoing treatment at Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital in the capital.
A team of Detective Branch of police arrested Minar from Kachukhet near Dhaka Cantonment in the capital on May 27 in connection with the killing of Ekramul Haque, also a local Awami League leader.
Ekram, president of Fulgazi upazila unit of Awami League, came under attack by miscreants in front of Bilasi Cinema Hall on May 20 on his way to Fulgazi upazila headquarters from his Masterpara residence in the Feni district town. The miscreants intercepted his microbus and fired at him from a very close range and then set fire to the vehicle. They left the scene after confirming Ekram’s death on the spot.
Ekram’s brother Rejaul Haque Jasim filed a case against Minar and 35 unidentified people with Feni Model Police Station on May 21.
